* "I love doing these Sepia full-value drawings of Tarahumara children. They are so shy and

precious; precious as are all children". I hope you enjoy them too. Thanks for visiting my website. Evelyn Valdez Martinez

Inspiration to paint:

When I saw this child, she reminded me of a Nikoli Fechin painting. She was so shy and so beautiful to look upon.  I visit and paint the Tarahumara Indians of the Sierra Madres in Chihuahua, Mexico. This little girl was with her grandmother, during one of my visits; and the grandmother had a serene but aloof presence that I dared not disturb. It took a few hours before I dared broach the subject of taking some photos of her little grand daughter. I love my time there. I look forward to visiting during harvest time. I treasure the friendships that I have made there. Paint what you love... I always do.

Reflection in Gold

Reflection in Gold

This painting was selected to be in a book by Kennedy Publishing: The Best of World Wide Oil Artists Volume I.
This is the best image avalilable of this painting. Since  Evelyn paints with such an extreme value range, it is difficult to reproduce her work, without loss of color in the whites, or loss of detail in the darks. This type of value range is what makes Evelyn's light so dynamic and dramatic.

Youthful Hope (Esperanza)

As I painted, these young Tarahumaran girls showed interest in oil painting too. They were so enthralled in doing something they'd never done before. I titled this painting:'Youthful Hope'. The girl on the far left is named Esperanza, which means 'Hope'.She attends school and is "HOPE" for her people. This painting was selected for a calendar by Ctr. for the Arts, Evergreen.

Rancher's Retirement

A rancher's retirement is only for the night. It is a life well lived and hard worked. It is a way of life, not a job. His hat, spurs and saddle are laid aside till the following morning.

Polonita's Sunset

I stepped outside having noticed an unusual lighting in the evening sky, and beheld one of the most glorious sunsets I have ever seen. I could hardly believe that I was so blessed to have experienced these special few moments of sheer joy.
